PAYNE’S RISE REDLANDS SHIRAZ 2010
MONDAY, SEP 5 2011 · POSTED IN SHIRAZ ET AL, YARRA VALLEY
BY CAMPBELL MATTINSON
This took out a couple of major awards at the most recent Yarra Valley Wine Show.
It’s not hard to see why. For the most part it’s an impeccable cool climate Australian shiraz. It’s a mix of white and black pepper, roasted fennel and dark meaty cherry. Texturally it has a smooth slipperiness and it’s intensely savoury and autumnal through the finish. It’s more foodie than fruity. The aftertaste pushes the boundaries re: a cool bitterness and it has some funky, gamey notes that some drinkers will find challenging. But it’s a complex, interesting wine – and such wines deserve recognition.

Payne’s Rise Redlands Shiraz 2010
(Yarra Valley) $26; 13.5%
Rated: 4.5/5
Classic cool-climate complexity, with dark cherry, black and white pepper, blackcurrant, mint and raspberry, is on show, as are savoury, meat/game, spice and cherry flavours. It has a smooth, silky texture with velvet-like tannins and a persistent finish.

Payne's Rise 2008 Chardonnay
Rated: 94 points
'This is fabulous value. It's complex, taut, elegant and lengthy. It tastes of lemon, green melon, struck matches and peach, and both its aroma and flavour are 100 percent spot on. It's at the complex, funky end of the chardonnay spectrum so you have to be 'into' this kind of thing'.

Rated 90/100 points - Drink 2011- James Halliday 2011 Australian Wine Companion.
Bright colour; has an equally balanced array of grassy/citrus and gooseberry/tropical fruit characters complexed by barrel fermentation in used oak; good acidity cleans up the finish.
Payne's Rise Redlands Shiraz 2009
90/100 points - James Halliday 2012 wine companion
Bright colour; a spicy blue & red fruited bouquet, showing herbaceous complexity; medium bodied & firmly structured, finishing with a mineral backbone.
